Step-by-step guide to becoming a Salesforce developer this year!

October 11, 2014

** IMPORTANT NOTE: The UPDATED guide is available here! **

You can be a Salesforce developer by the end of the year!

– Zero prior coding experience needed
– Must be willing to dedicate 5 – 10 hours a week to learning
– No need to be a genius

…Anyone can Code!

Step 1: Watch the Apex Academy!

This is just a preview of course #1 – check out the full lineup!

Step 2: Watch my Dreamforce sessions!

Anyone Can Code!
Breakout Session

Coding on Force.com for Non-Developers
Hands-on Workshop

Admins Who Code Q&A Panel
Q&A Panel Session (still waiting for the recording)

Step 3: Read the Head First Java book!
This book is worth the $30 you’ll spend on Amazon!

Read just 5 pages of this book per day.
Yes, only 5 pages a day is more than enough!
You’ll have the basics down in just two months.
Bonus points if you read it before sleeping – this gets you in the habit.
I strictly make no money from this site – so no royalties here!

Step 4: Read three SFDC99 tutorials per week!

Quizzes and challenges count as one too!
I’ll have the forums up again soon so you can learn from each other.

Step 5: Watch the official #Apex4Admins webinar series!
Salesforce and I teamed up the make the ultimate beginner Apex tutorial!

The video above is part 1 of the 3 part series

Step 6: Do Salesforce’s official Trailhead Apex tutorials!

Trailhead is Salesforce’s official training tool for admins and developers and it’s chock-full of videos, code, and challenges. The best part is that it’s fully integrated to your dev org, so it knows if you’re completing the assignments or not!

Step 7: Promise me you’ll become a Salesforce developer!
Write a comment on this post and hold yourself accountable to the world!

I have nothing but respect to those with the courage to do this step. Trust me, I know your fears!

P.S. I’ll forgive you if you missed last season’s cutoff as long as you nail it this time!

I do so solemnly swear to get my Platform Developer I certification by the end of 2020.

I have been a Salesforce professional for 9 years now and have never truly committed to learning how to code. My long-term goal is to achieve my Technical Architect certification. I am currently a certified Platform Builder.

Hey David,

I used to work in Java and recently switched to Salesforce. I know the underlying structure for Salesforce is Java. But, not sure how reading Java book is helpful here. Can you please elaborate on that.

Thanks.

Hi David. I noticed the head first book says it’s for java 5 and 6 and written in 2003. Is it still relevant since Java is now on 12? Just want to confirm before I start reading. Complete beginner.

I currently have no experience or background in coding (I do have my Admin Cert, and am taking Platform App Builder in a week or two)

That being said I’m taking a lot of time these next two months to read Head First Java, watch all your material from Apex for Admins to Apex Academy, and go through your SFDC99 tutorials and Trailhead modules in order to take my Platform I Developer Exam by the end of November.

By the end of 2019 I WILL be a Certified Salesforce Developer! Thanks for the help and inspiration David. I’m all ears if you have any additional advice as well :-)

Hi David,

The past 4 years I’ve been responsible for customising and administering the Nonprofit pack for the organisation I work with.

I’ve really enjoyed it and now want to take my skills to a new level with formal qualification and get into development in the futrure. So my question is I first need to get SF Administrator certified – do I take the Udemy course or go through Trailblazer? I do know a lot about SF but I’m sure I’ve missed loads that does not apply to my line of work. Plus, I’m only about to transition to Lightning next month (reading up on it now).

Second, once this is done, I want to become a developer, so I’m looking at your course.

Am I on the right track or can you advise. Much appreciated, Helen

With your experience you’ll likely find admin certification courses not a good use of your time and money, even as a refresher.

You’re much more likely to fail the cert because you don’t remember how many days a record stays in the recycle bin, for example.

Check out some of the free stuff here and if you don’t feel comfortable then consider a course.

Hi David,

First of all a big thanks to you for this initiative, creating this platform to help Salesforce enthusiasts learning coding. I am also one of them. I have overall experience of 4 years as a Salesforce admin and support. I do not have any coding background and neither I ever learnt any programming language but I am very keen to become a full time Salesforce developer+Admin and I am sure this website is really going to help me a lot.

I have just been through the first step of this module it looks very motivating. But I have little doubt if I can really become a Salesforce developer with zero knowledge in java. Should I also start leaning java in parallel which I have already started as a self learner?

But I give my full commitment here that I will give my best and make full use of this website to be a Developer.

Thanks,

Jitendra.

    Awesome!

Really the Java part is optional. In some ways it can be misleading to you since there are differences between Java and Apex.

Learn the Apex part first and if you feel like you’re hitting a wall, look into Java.

Also, you probably need to read some success stories to increase your confidence =)

My goal for next 5-6 months is to learn courses, get trained well through online resources including this blog….will take ADM 201, DEV 401 certifications and should land in a job.
My prioroties are as below:
#1. Apex
#2. Visual Force
#3. Force.com
#4. SOQL
#5. Lightening

Hello Karthik, As a Java developer, you probably have a ton of coding experience, which is great. The one thing I would stress to any experienced developer new to Salesforce is to understand the orders of execution (https://developer.salesforce.com/docs/atlas.en-us.apexcode.meta/apexcode/apex_triggers_order_of_execution.htm), try to understand everything mentioned within: this involves understanding Admin stuff like workflows and assignment rules and other declarative development factors. On top of that, you should understand Salesforce governor limits and how they will apply to your code and any other code within the database transaction. For example, you should never run a SOQL query or DML (like update.variable)within a “for” loop.
I would say familiarize yourself with the limits imposed by Salesforce, learn how to work your own coding skills within these limits, and the world will be completely your oyster!

Hi Karthik, I am on the same path. I am on java from past 5 years and 1 year of salesforce experience before that. Also have DEV 401 certification. But I am not in touch with SF for 5 years. I have started learning again. Let me know how I can reach you, so that we can be in touch to help each other.

hey David, I spent the last few months earning my admin certification and now I’m ready to go straight into the developer world. Would you say that the book you recommend above is better than Java In a Nutshell? or Sams Teach Yourself Java in 24 Hours? I read Head First Java 5 years ago but in all honesty, back then I was fresh out of university and wasn’t really looking to learn coding at that time.

Head First Java is more of a supplement nowadays. There are just so many Apex courses now that you’re almost wasting your time with non-Apex material!

Hi David,

I’ve recently joined a well known IT brand and I’ve been trained on Salesforce. I’ve joined a project which demands me to work as a Salesforce Dev. I’ve been given pages to build. However, I’m finding it hard to develop logic and even if I’m able to build log, I’m finding it difficult to implement. I don’t have much of coding background and know just basic coding. Please let me know how to go forward in learning so that I can quickly learn and then implement that in order to succeed in my job.

Thanks

I heard you speak at Snowforce in Utah in 2016 and it was the first time I ever thought that Salesforce could be a career. I have since received my Advanced Admin Cert and Platform App Builder and now want to go on to become a Salesforce Developer. My goal is to become certified by September 2017. I’m not even 1 year into the Salesforce Community but I do believe i will be sticking around for a while. Making a commitment to become a developer in a year! thanks for all that you do.

I’ve been an admin for awhile now, and have implemented many nonprofits. I’ve been hitting the edges of my playpen with admin skills alone and found your site needing to write my first trigger. After that…whoa…there is magic on the dev end that I want to tap into. So, it became clear to me last week that I need to self-teach dev skillz this year just like I self-taught admin skillz 5 years ago. I helped my 8 year old make a Minecraft mod and that is my *only* experience w/Java so far, but hey, I’m always game to learn. The book is ordered, you have a great plan in place, and THIS is the year I’m going to do this. Thanks for your encouragement and all you do!

Hey David,

Just one regret…i wish I had found out about you much sooner! My situation is kind of reversed… I have an extensive technical background…18 years of SAP dev and config. I gave all of that up at a drop of a hat when I was offered a SF Admin position in Oct 2015 because I knew SF was such a hot skill. I love being an admin and I believe it actually gave me a solid foundation so that on the day I cracked open an apex code to fix an issue (one that a consultant firm was going to charge us a lot of money for) I was able to do it myself. I was hooked! And when I found out about you, I was hell bent on getting all the certs I can get my hands on and eventually be a Tech Arch.

So thanks for putting fire under my booty. You are my hero and I COMMIT to getiting my Dev cert in 6 mos and my Tech Arch cert in 12 mos.

Thank you thank you for all you do!!!

I started working in my company as a Salesforce Administrator since November, 2015. I have a Masters in Commerce (Marketing and Business Management) degree. I have till date taken no technical coaching or never had any learning of computers academically. I always wanted to have a career in IT as i was an avid gamer, learnt most of my computing knowledge trying to play games on my pc (trying to install pirated games is a great learning experience, because we couldnt afford the original games). Since last few years i have working at my company as a SharePoint Administrator (without any knowledge of coding) and now want to learn coding as in Salesforce world to get things done in reality you really need the coding experience or you are left paralyze and are dependent on others to assist you with it. Being in a very big organisation with complex business processes and constant introductions of new products, one is heavily dependent on developers based in different city and awaiting them to have time to take my requests. I would want to learn to do the simpler things myself so we can have a quick turnaround and with this i can surely make my mark.

With your site it has given me confidence to start learning coding and making sense of it and overcoming my fear of codes.
I hope i can follow the instructions and make a career working on Salesforce.

Thanks David for this wonderful site and your positive attitude is quite infectious, also everyone reading the blog posts by everyone who got certified and have made the change from no coder to coder is really aspiring and big applause for everyone who wants to be better and has become better by self learning.

Hi David!

You are super awesome. I am following your steps and completed the webinars, reading the book (Head first Java). I am now working through the Salesforce trainings.
My questions is, How soon should I consider taking the first test SF ADMIN 201? I mean, should we pace the tests at certain intervals, or do you suggest taking them all at the end? Just curious… Thanks Colette =)

Some people do it literally after one week – so that’s definitely possible!

More realistically I’d say 1 month each cert – anything more than that and you’re probably slacking.

Hi David,
just came across your video on Youtube. Now my background is pretty rough, left high school mid way as I was bullied. Had to develop my intellect through self study, as I had a lot of interest with gaming and computing, I grasped the concept of coding by reading books on Objective C and Java, then did some beginner apps on Android with Eclipse and Android studio via Bucky on YouTube. I have friends who are part of Salesforce, and have offered to help in order to become a Salesforce Developer. I’ve just been through a lot in life and I was going through the doubt stage that you mentioned on your video, “can I do it?” You certainly changed my doubtful perception.

Aiming to become a certified developer by the end of this year. Hope I get the chance to meet you some day. Wish me luck.

David,

Many thanks for your encouragement via this page. I have taught mathematics, statistics and computer science for over 30 years. In those years the education business has (to say the least) declined as an attractive place in which to earn a living. I have a background career in software, with substantial ORACLE training. I’ve taught JAVA programming at several schools on multiple levels. You have me believing that by committing to Salesforce developer certification, I can SUCCESSFULLY start a new career within half a year. I am committed. THANK YOU!

Hi David,

Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge through this blog! I have been following you for the past 2-3 months now. I managed to obtain all my 5 functional certifications towards the end of last year before I stumbled onto your blog. I previously thought that becoming a developer would be too much of a challenge since I am a business major but after watching your Dreamforce video, it has inspired me to step up to THAT challenge.

My goal is to be ready for Adv Developer certification by June this year. I wanted to ask, does these 5-6 steps you have provided above, and the Official SFDC Study Guide be sufficient for my preparation?

Thank you once again. I believe the work that you have done here will be a legacy for years to come and the community that you have inspired will continue to pay it forward.

Best,

I have been working in the Salesforce arena for 10 YEARS as a BA, Solution Architect, PM, etc.because I love the application. But I have been too chicken to deep dive into development formally and give it a try. Thanks to an internship at Salesforce, and the opportunity to attend Dreamforce ’14, I realize now that programming is my true passion. I PROMISE you that I’ll be a kickass Force.com developer by Summer 2015. I’m starting now. I just ordered HF Java, I’ve already passed the Admin and Developer exams, and my next goal is the Advanced Developer certification. Heck, it would be pretty awesome to eventually have the Technical Architect certification. I can’t wait to write my own classes and triggers. This is going to be a bumpy road, switching career goals and learning something 100% new, but thanks for this awesome site, David!

David, your advice is perfect. I studied exactly what you recommended in addition to working with my developer copy of Salesforce and easily passed the developer exam a couple of days ago. One thing that really helped me — I took the time to understand WHY an answer was correct, not just memorizing the answer. The actual test questions are very descriptive and the wording (if you know the material) will point you to the correct answer.

I took about six weeks to study, usually 10 hours per week. I could have probably passed with less study time but I really wanted to know the material.

Thank you for bringing clarity to the testing process. I am now going to study for the Admin exam and hope to take it before the end of the year!

Hey David,
Thanks a ton for putting up such an informative website. I have always wanted to be a developer and I tried my hand at coding a couple of times in the past but always gave up because I thought that I just didn’t have the aptitude/intellect for it. I attended your session this year at Dreamforce and I can’t express in words that how motivated and geared up I now am again to become a Salesforce developer in 6-8 months from now (hopefully even sooner!). If I am able to do it this time and don’t end up giving up, I swear I am gonna send you a huge box of Indian sweets :)

Hi David,

I currently have my adm 201, advanced adm 211 (formerly 301), and my dev 401 certifications. I am finding more and more though, that along with having the 401 certification, companies looking to hire expect me to be able to code. Which of course, I have absolutely no knowledge of coding languages or methods. I am really looking forward to beginning your tutorials and learning to code by the end of the year (hopefully)! I just purchased the Head First Java book and cannot wait. I just wanted to say thank you for creating such a site to help the admins like me who really need to take our skills to the next level!

Best Regards,

Nick

Hi David.. I promise you, I’ll become great Salesforce developer. I took my first step too. I have successfully completed my 401 certification, and best part is I got job as a trainee Salesforce developer in Mumbai, India.
Now learning core java + apex as you suggest.
I am my own worst enemy. But one best thing I learned from you is that “believe” . Even I can do it.

I am watching the first webinar right now! I am not sure if I can do 5-10 hours/week, but I will do as much as I can. My goal had been by the end of January, but if I can do it by the end of the year, that would be awesome. I couldn’t go to Dreamforce, so I will watch for the recordings of your sessions to be posted. I just started reading the book last night too! Thank you for this site! One question, after doing all this do you think it would be reasonable to try to take the Advanced Dev certification, or would that take a lot more studying? I have Admin, Advanced Admin, and Dev certs now.

Advanced dev is a beast, you will need either a TON of studying or 1 year coding experience!

OK, count me in! If anyone else uses the app ‘Lift’ then you can find 2 Apex4Admin goals in there, one to read the book and one to do the tutorials :-)

Already got the job as a jr. Salesforce developer. now learning apex and fixing currently broken triggers. plan to start writing new code by January. Plan to have five certifications by March. Plan to tell you “I did it!” in March/April 2015.

without this website I would be lost. my org has the premier package with training videos for salesforce and the videos still cannot match this website.

great job and thank you!

Already made the first steps towards this goal by completing the Udacity course this week. After much urging from my Salesforce admin friends to give it a go, I say Challenge…Accepted!

From Bartender to Salesforce Developer.

Im done! I just quit my job at the Santander Bank Dave :)
My last day is the 17th of October, my birthday.
Im going to invest in my career, study full time, 100% for 3 months or more, get certified then go to England (I just came back from London, again) and land a position there. SF is booming in the UK!
So, definitely going to follow the Admin to Dev path.
Thank you for your inspiration!

You always encourage me! thanks for that.
However, I still need your support before going out to Salesforce’s world. As you’ve been informed of my failure during the fist interview, It would be very helpful if you guide me the advance topic like web service, advance apex, visualforce etc..

I am hungry of learning :-)))

      Hi David,

I made it ! I mad it! I have received the confirmation that I’m recruited for Business Analyst/Junior developer job. Thank you for your encouragement and advise. I wouldn’t make it without it. I will write my story on blog and share to motivate other people. I am sure that my story will inspire them as I came from the no-code background.

I will start my work on early November under the probation of 4 months ( I am still concern during this probation period as I have never worked in this field before, much appreciated if you can give some advise).

Good luck to those who made promise like me and wish you all the best.

I would love to hear from you all.

      Kind Regards,

      Visal
