Mailbag: How do I learn Visualforce?

February 2, 2015

Dear David,

Your blog is a great work. Keep it up.

Dropping this email to request you to suggest a training path for Visualforce.
Like topics to start with and progression to get an understanding on different features.
Also good sites for content.

Sincerely,
Visualforce Dreamer

———————–

Dear Visualforce Dreamer,

I get more questions about Visualforce than anything else!

It is time to put a stake in this topic once and for all!

If 15 people comment on this post saying “We want Visualforce lessons!” then I’ll do a Visualforce tutorial! Deadline is February 28th, 2015.
Well.. that took about 2 hours. I was so wrong!! Visualforce coming soon (maybe next chapter)!
Keep the comments coming, it’ll help me know how soon I should write the tutorials!

Otherwise, this is how I learned Visualforce:

  1. Do the entire HTML tutorial on w3schools.
  2. Do the entire CSS tutorial on w3schools.
  3. Do the entire Javascript tutorial on w3schools.
  4. Study the official Visualforce Workbook

Best of luck!
David

David – did you REALLY think you wouldn’t get 15 people asking for your incredibly valuable services? :) You have a knack for breaking down large volumes of information into easily digestible bites that make learning a topic so much easier and less daunting. So OF COURSE we all want your guidance!

As always, thank you for all you do. And thank your new bride for allowing us to steal more of your time. :)

Funny you mention Visual Force, that’s my new thing. I was trying how to figure out how put “Welcome (username)” on the main page on the Customer Service app I am trying to make. I thought I had to use apex:output and then I saw someone posted a URL on YOUR forums that addressed the issue. I also just posted in the DEV forums about using a background image and apparently I need to learn CSS basics. My HTML skill level is the equivalent of SELECT Name FROM Account in SOQL but trying to get better.

David,

Of course We want Visualforce lessons! :)
And did you type 15 instead of 150 comments? With the way people follow your site, 15 comments should have been in less than an hour. Your blog is a real motivation and I haven’t seen anyone like you who is interested in Knowledge Sharing !!!
Please keep up the great work.

Thanks

Hi David,

Visualforce ! Yes we want. However, I heard from you that it will be soon replaced by Lightning, so would it be better starting with latest technology ?

I piloted Lightning and immediately thought that at its current state, it was very far from becoming mainstream!

Sounds like a great idea. I picked up Head First Java from the Library yesterday. I judge my level of interest in a book by whether I read the Roman numeral pages. I read them all in this book. Although at 688 pages, and a couple of pounds, I think I will switch to the electronic version.

Hi David!

“We want Visualforce lessons!” :)

I am also new to Salesforce and preparing for Developer certification.
I was just to start the visualforce developer guide but it will be great if you can help with some good and to the point content.

Also please suggest what percentage does the visualforce conent occupy in certification exams?

Thanks & Regards,
Rocky
